Gardening Methods

If you take care of your soil life, they will give the plants all they need to grow healthy, nutritious food.

Even though Certified Naturally Grown and Certified Organic allow organic natural substance pesticides, we feel that even these pesticides are not good for the environment. Natural pesticides kill both bad and good bugs.

At In The Woods Market Garden, we use barriers to control bugs, such as collars around springtime transplants to help control cut worms. We also plant a variety of flowers in and around the garden beds to attract the good bugs, many birdhouses so the birds have a place to nest while devouring the bad bugs, and tall grass growing around the garden for snakes and other wildlife habitats.

Our soil fertility management is based on feeding the microorganisms that live in the soil. Photosynthesis is feeding the soil by keeping the soil planted as much as possible with vegetable plants and cover crops. By mulching heavily with leaf matter, weeding is cut down and it breaks down and feeds the bacteria and fungi that live in the soil. To boost the plants’ micro-nutrients and the soil’s microorganisms, we use Korean Natural Farming techniques and apply homemade Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ) made from dandelions and homemade leaf mold biology.

About the Gardeners

Christel Lewis

I first learned to garden when helping my Mom. After I moved out and got my own home, I was excited to plant veggie and flower gardens and loved being able to grow my own food! It felt very satisfying to eat what I grew myself.

After working as a systems engineer in the corporate world for 20 years, my husband and I moved to the country, where I wanted to change careers by putting my gardening love to work. After my first harvest of In the Woods Market Garden, I wanted to make my healthy, nutritious produce available to my community.

Boots

Boots is Christel’s assistant and constant companion when we are outside working in the gardens. She helpfully chases off deer from the gardens and alerts us of any bears in the area.

Our Shared Commitments

I promise to do my best to provide you with fresh, delicious produce each week.

While I do everything in my power to deliver a consistent bounty, unexpected challenges may occur, such as weather or pests, and the quantity of produce may fluctuate from week to week. In the unlikely event of a crop failure, produce may not be available for some weeks.

Rest assured, I am fully committed to our shared success. Even during recent droughts, the pond irrigation system has not dried up, and we have been able to water the entire growing season!

Pick up your produce right from where it was grown and harvested!

You are about to join a community that is committed to supporting small farms and local businesses! It is the member’s responsibility to pick up the freshly harvested shares each Wednesday during the season from 4pm to 5:30pm from the market garden in Foxboro, WI.

If you are unable to pick up on the scheduled day/time, please arrange for a friend or family member to do so. We can also donate your shares to a local food bank of your choice. Please text or email before Wednesday with your pick-up arrangements.

Although most of the food is prewashed with a garden hose, please wash all of your produce before eating for your added protection.
